INSPIRED BY REAL STORIES
Born in Jackson Heights and raised in Queens, celebrated author Marina Budhos brings her latest novel back home for a week, with a teen cafe night, a bookstore reading and an afternoon finale of street theater combining performance and fiction. Watched is Budhos’ homage to teenage boys and Queens, a story of surveillance in Muslim-American communities. We look forward to seeing you in Queens!

Surveillance Theater LIVE in Jackson Heights
Named for the 167 languages spoken in Jackson Heights, the most diverse neighborhood in the world, Theatre167 (http://www.theatre167.org/) is a multicultural, multilingual ensemble dedicated to creating imaginative, deeply collaborative plays that investigate our cultural complexities. Now they are bringing Watched to life, drawing from the neighborhood and streets that inspired Budhos’ novel. We follow Naeem, a local boy who becomes a watcher in his own community. You can use the map below to track Naeem’s journey, allowing you to enter into a story of conflict and belonging in our post-9/11 era of terror and surveillance. Scroll down for the full schedule.
